Otipemisiwak Métis Government President Elect Andrea Sandmaier

On September Nineteenth, the Métis Nation of Alberta held its first general election for leadership under the new Otipemisiwak (OH-TI-PIM-SA-WACK) constitution.

With over three thousand votes over her opponent, Andrea Sandmaier was elected the first President of the Otipemisiwak government.

Sandmaier shared with Windspeaker Media about her victory.

 

During the election the six Metis Regions were broken up into twenty-two districts to allow Metis citizens to be closer to the government.

Sandmaier shared how the new districts will help with future programing.

 

Apart of her new role will be bring a stronger united voice of Alberta’s Métis population when it comes to being represented as an Indigenous Nation.

Sandmaier shares how that voice will help bring reconciliation to the Métis Nation.

 

Other projects that Sandmaier will be working on include:

  • Developing Métis recovery centers
  • Working with the Federal Government to sign a modern Treaty
  • Develop a Métis child welfare system
