Addiction is a struggle and a battle for many in the province of Alberta, a way to help people struggling with addiction in the Iyarhe Nakoda Nation opened its first adult treatment Centre.

Over the summer the Provincial government partnered with the First Nations of Enoch, Tsuut’ina, Siksika, Kainai (Blood Tribe) to open recovery communities to help those seeking to overcome their addiction in a holistic environment.

On October 5, a ceremony took place for the new recovery treatment Centre in Mini Thni with members from Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney First Nations gathered see the new building and show their support.

Unlike recovery communities and centres announced during the summer, the one in Mini Thni was solely funned and supported by the nations of the Iyarhe Nakoda.

The new facility operates through Stoney Health Services and can house 18 clients who are members of the Iyarhe Nakoda Nation who are seeking to take the next step of their journey of sobriety.

The facility also has accessible accommodations for those with mobility challenges.

The recovery Centre is a beacon of hope to the community, Chiniki First Nation Councilor Charles Mark shares that the Centre represents an opportunity for Stoney Nakoda Nation members to heal.

Programing at the facility will be rooted in traditional Iyarhe Nakoda practises of healing and culture as a holistic healing approach for 90-days.

Clients will be provided with a room at the treatment Centre and have meals made by on site staff.

Those taking part in the program aren’t locked into it as they can leave anytime and if they chose to return, they will have to start from the beginning of the program.
