Calgary Zoo welcomes new faces to the re-opened Wild Canada exhibit

While residence of Calgary has been attending Zoo lights during the winter season, visitors may notice that the Canadian wildlife area of the grounds have been re-opened.

On December 1, 2023, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo re-opened their Wild Canada exhibit after closing the exhibit back in 2021.

“Under the sky, we are all one. The theme of interconnectedness between humans, wildlife, and the land is woven throughout the entire zone.” -Lauryn Record Senior Strategist, Interpretive Planning & Creative Services, Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. 

The $31-million-dollar expansion put a focus on the various and diverse landscape that makes up Canada from the Boreal Forests to the Northern Tundra.

While many faces of the previous exhibit making a return with improved enclosures are the muskox, woodland caribou, whooping crane, and North American river otter.

One of the newest faces making an appearance to the newly improved enclosures will be a pair of polar bears Baffin and Siku from the Winnipeg Assiniboine Park Zoo have their enclosure spread out over 2-acres.

The newly redeveloped Wild Canada exhibit included over 20 artists, seven of whom are Indigenous artists from various Nations across Canada.

Each of the artists came from a variety of backgrounds from painting, metal works, photography, sculptures, and sound design.

Lauryn Record Senior Strategist, Interpretive Planning & Creative Services, Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo in a press release said, “Under the sky, we are all one. The theme of interconnectedness between humans, wildlife, and the land is woven throughout the entire zone. We’ve pushed the boundaries of traditional interpretive design with this project by integrating art, science, storytelling, and technology. I’m excited for visitors to deepen their connection to Canadian landscapes and wildlife during this experience.”

 Wild Canada will be open to the public during the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s hours of operations and special programing.
