Friday is National Indigenous Peoples Day, and the City of Medicine Hat will be continuing the celebration to Saturday so residents can have an immersive experience with its Indigeneity Block Party.
The Block Party is taking place at Towne Square next to Medicine Hat City Hall and will be a dedicated and time for learning about Blackfoot culture during National Indigenous Peoples History Month.
This celebration will feature drum making, Blackfoot Elder protocol teachings with local Elder Charlie Fox of the Kainai Nation and a ribbon skirt fashion show for everyone who wears a ribbon skirt or shirt.
Local Blackfoot Leader Breanda Mercer explains why the fashion show is for everyone, especially those who are allies of Indigenous Culture.
The City of Medicine Hat will also be holding a smudging ceremony from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at City Hall as part of the City’s commitment to Reconciliation on Friday for National Indigenous People’s Day.
