Communities across the province have been dealing with a shortage of physicians.

The rural areas of the province have dealt with this issue the most.

The emergency department in Fort McLeod was recently closed due to a lack of physician coverage, it has since re-opened but since June, that was at least the fifth time the emergency department has closed.

Nearly 650,000 Albertans currently do not have a family doctor, according to the Alberta Medical Association.

To attract more doctors to the province, the AMA is currently working with the province of Alberta on new compensation packages for family and acute care, but progress has been slow.

A new funding model for family physicians, from the province, is expected by the end of September.
