Four Indigenous Community organizations selected to develop affordable housing projects

Four Indigenous community organizations have been chosen to develop affordable housing in Calgary as part of a City initiative.

On Jan 23, The Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary announced it will be developing nine townhomes in the Cresent Heights Community for Indigenous Families.

The announced development is part of the City’s 2023-2030 housing strategy to increase the housing supply of the demand for and improve affordable housing in Calgary.

The new units will be focused on providing cultural spaces for ceremonies, programming, and connection while fostering stability, healing, and empowerment.

There is currently no set date on when the new units will be ready to be moved into but, the City of Calgary is providing a per door funding of $75 thousand dollars to assist in speedy development of the units within the next four years.

To date, the City has contributed $25.3 million dollars towards the development of 835 homes for Calgarians in need.

Other chosen organizations are Onward Home in Erlton and Shaganappi, Siksika Off-Reserve Affordable Housing in Erin Woods, and Liberty Housing Organization in Haysboro.
