The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) is reminding residents to make sure that they take precautions against carbon monoxide during cold temperatures after a father and son were admitted to the hospital.

At 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, CFD where dispatched to an N.E. residence in Cityside Garden for a medical call involving a four-year-old experiencing breathing difficulties and losing consciousness.

Upon arrival, firefighters detected carbon monoxide levels of 600 parts per million (ppm) which are considered life-threatening.

Emergency Medical Services assessed an adult male and the child before transporting both to the hospital for further care.

CFD ventilated the home and monitored carbon monoxide levels until they dropped to zero.

During their response, crews also discovered there were no working carbon monoxide alarms in the residence and further investigation later determined the high levels of carbon monoxide came from a vehicle in the attached garage since the morning.

CFD wants to remind Calgary residents that vehicles shouldn’t be running in a small, closed space, even when the door is open.
