The 2025 Calgary Stampede is coming up quickly and this year will feature a new event on the professional rodeo.
One of the fastest-growing women’s events in professional rodeo is Breakaway Roping which involves a cowgirl roping a calf, stopping the horse, breaking the rope from the saddle horn, and recording the fastest time.
This is the second female competition added to the rodeo since nineteen-seventy-nine when barrel racing was added.
The event was added in partnership with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, which hosted its annual Rocky Mountain Cup alongside Stampede in 2023 and 2024.
Not only will breakaway ropers have their time from the 2025 Stampede count towards world rankings, but they will also have a shot at taking a piece of the $310,250 dollar pot, which has now brought the total prize money for the rodeo to over two million dollars.
There are 30 spots available in the Stampede Rodeo, 24 competitors will secure their spot through their standing in the previous and current year’s Canadian and WPRA Pro Rodeo rankings, while the six remaining spots are up for grabs via two Breakaway Roping qualifier events.
Rodeo fans who want a taste of what is to come for the Breakaway Roping this summer can see the qualifier for the Stampede Pro Rodeo at the Nutrien Western Event Centre on June 3 and 4.
