The concept for new multipurpose buildings in the Stoney Nakoda Nation for Mini Thni and Eden Valley dates to 2008 as a way to offer programming for the youth of Chiniki, Goodstoney, and Bearspaw First Nations.

These new buildings are not only to offer space for community gatherings but, to offer extra activities for the Nations’ youth to take part in sports while engaging in a healthy lifestyle that is promoted through sport.

After a bad contracting deal with a building being torn down, Bearspaw First Nation, along with partnerships from Nakoda Nation leadership, Indigenous Services Canada, and a newly chosen contractor in Calgary construction company Sprung, the project was completed in five years, with groundbreaking in 2020.

At the grand opening of the new building on May 21, 2025, Bearspaw First Nation CEO Rob Shotclose said the need to care for the facility is great, as the community’s infrastructure has deteriorated over time.

The new multipurpose building will be able to host various community events and indoor sports such as basketball and volleyball, along with a side area with workout machines.

A hockey rink is currently under construction, and the multipurpose building has room to expand as Eden Valley’s needs grow.
