July 1 is a day many Canadians gather together!

However for some Indigenous people, not everyone celebrates Canada Day, as they say it brings up memories of the past and old wounds that may never fully heal.

As a way to celebrate Indigenous culture on July 1, local Calgary Elder Joanne Dan started Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day back in 2023.

Elder Joanne shared with CJWE’s Keith Driver about what this year’s celebration will include in Calgary’s downtown core as the celebration enters its third year.

The celebration will be kicking off at Calgary’s City Hall by the Indian Residential School memorial on July 1 at 11 am.
