Calgary’s northern neighbor, Airdrie, has been experiencing rapid growth, necessitating an expansion of its infrastructure to support the city’s development.

Since 2022, the population of Airdrie has grown by 25 percent, with its current population well over 90 thousand residents.

As part of that growth, it will include a seven-kilometre wastewater pipeline that will connect to Calgary’s wastewater treatment system, which has been part of a regional agreement between the two communities that dates back to the 1970s.

On July 30, the Alberta Government announced it will be investing $50 million towards the $114 million project, which will replace the need for a new wastewater treatment centre in Airdrie.

While the announcement of the wastewater pipe isn’t as flashy as something like a new recreation centre, Devin Dresshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, says it’s important for municipalities to focus on key infrastructure.

The Alberta Government’s commitment to the pipe marks the largest investment from the Province in Airdrie’s history, according to the city’s Mayor Peter Brown, who says that the effects of the pipe will impact Alberta’s economy as a whole.

The is scheduled to be completed by 2027 with shovels in the ground by the summer of 2026.
