For the past 60 years, the Calgary Stampede has been holding the First Nations Princess program to empower female leaders in Treaty 7. These princesses act as ambassadors and a living symbol of the Stampede’s unique partnership with First Nations people in Southern Alberta.

Crowned in November of 2024, Pacey Strangling Wolf of Kainai whose traditional name is Otsskoiikitstakaii (Blue Offering Woman), was chosen as the 2025 First Nations Princess. Since then, Strangling Wolf has been making appearances across Southern Alberta promoting the special relationship between the Calgary Stampede and local First Nations.

As the applications for the 2026 Stampede First Nations Princess are currently open, Strangling Wolf spoke with Nefew Keith about her time as a Stampede Royal and offered advice for those who may be interested in applying to become the next First Nations Princess.

The deadline for applications for the 2026 Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess is September 28 at 4 P.M. More information is available on the Stampede’s website.
