The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged 71-year-old Tsuut’ina Nation Chief Roy Whitney with two counts of sexual assault, which date back to 1994.

The investigation into the first alleged sexual assault from 1994, which took place in the City of Edmonton, was brought to the attention of EPS in November 2024, after a 33-year-old male reported to EPS that the alleged sexual assault took place along 178 Street and 87 Avenue.

During the investigation, EPS where made aware of another alleged sexual assault of a 38-year-old male who was assaulted in the summer of 2005 along Stony Plain Road and 178 Street.

Both complainants, who are from Tsuut’ina, are known to the suspect but are unknown to each other, according to EPS.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, EPS arrested Chief Whitney for two counts of sexual assault.

EPS is asking anyone who believes they have been victimized by the accused to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. EPS can also provide appropriate support.

Late Thursday, Chief Whitney sent out a statement denying the allegations of sexual assault.
He says the criminal allegations against him are false and he intends to continue on in his role as chief.
“I will fully cooperate with any lawful proceedings to ensure the facts are made clear,” reads the statement. “Until that time, I ask our citizens and the public to withhold judgment and avoid speculation.”
Whitney has served a dozen non-consecutive terms as chief of the nation that lies on Calgary’s southwest city limits. He was first elected in the 1980s and was most recently re-elected in November 2022.
