On August 19, 2025, the City of Calgary announced an Indigenous Housing Program, Maa’too’maa’taapii Aoko’iyii’piaya, representing a historic $30 million investment in Indigenous-led housing solutions in Calgary.

In attendance for Tuesday morning’s announcement were Elder Jackie Bromley, member of the Housing Solutions Elders Advisory Committee; Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek; Reid Hendry, Chief Housing Officer with the City of Calgary; and Samantha Efthimiou, Leader of Indigenous Housing with the City of Calgary.

Efthimiou opened the announcement by outlining the pressing need for, and the rationale behind, the Maa’too’maa’taapii Aoko’iyii’piaya program.

Elder Jackie Bromley of the Kainai First Nation, a cultural leader, teacher, residential school survivor and member of the Housing Solutions Elders Advisory Committee said it’s not just a program — it’s reconciliation in action, and a promise that carries responsibilities.

Bromley added that the program is open to all Treaty 7 First Nations, the Métis Nation of Alberta, and Indigenous non-profits in Calgary.

Mayor Gondek also spoke, noting that this housing program isn’t only about buildings, it’s about belonging, and part of the City’s collective journey toward reconciliation. It will provide up to 350 new affordable homes built in a culturally informed way.

Hendry said, applications are expected to open next week, with the application window remaining open for six to eight weeks. Funding is expected to begin early next year.
