September is a time of new beginnings, as many people come back from summer holidays and get back to their routines. A new furry face is creating baby fever at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo.

Malayan Tapirs are classified as a species at risk as fewer than 2,500 Tapirs remain in the wild, as their rapid decline is due to loss of habitat and human contact in Southeast Asia’s Rainforests.

On Wednesday, September 3, The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo announced that a new Tapir has been added to the declining population as its female Malayan Tapir Semporna gave birth after a thirteen-month pregnancy, which is a first for the Zoo.

Newly born Tapir calves are born with white strips that give them a watermelon-like appearance, which acts as a natural camouflage against predators in the wild.

The newborn and the new mother will remain out of the public’s view for the coming weeks as the Wilder Institute lets them bond and become accustomed to their environment.

Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo encourages everyone to stay up check their social media accounts for more updates and announcements for the mother and child’s grand debut.
