Indigenous culture will come alive in Medicine Hat as the sounds of drums and fiddles fill the air for Alberta Culture Days in the coming week.

One of the goals of Alberta Cultures is to celebrate what makes each community special through the people who call it home.

In Medicine Hat, that is going to be done through a showcase of the Indigenous culture and people through gatherings of traditional celebrations that bring people together.

Carlee Eagle Plume, Youth and Parent Education Manager at the Miywasin Friendship Centre, says that because of the city’s urban Indigenous community, the Centre tries to help those find connection while they are away from their home communities.

The weekend of culture will begin on September 20, with a Powwow demonstration taking place at the Sammis Tipi once again, as it was closed for restoration. Everyone planning on attending is encouraged to bring their own seating.

On September 21, a Métis Kitchen party will be in Police Point Park featuring Juno-nominated Metis Fiddler Brianna Lizotee.
