Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers Logos
The NHL Next Gen Showcase is kicking off tonight as the two Alberta rivals put their top prospects against each other.
Before the NHL Battle of Alberta between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames kicks off in October, both teams will see if their next generation of players has what it takes to be the best in the province with a weekend doubleheader.
The results of the game determine who makes dress for the opening of the NHL preseason.
On the Flames bench, 2023 first-round pick Sam Honzek, who was able to join the bench last season but was dropped due to an injury limiting his performance, says he’s ready for another shot to impress this year as he’s been building his body to take on Hockey’s elite.
Meanwhile, in Edmonton, Isaac “Iceman” Howard, who was first drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020, was recently traded to the Oilers.
Iceman said he is looking to impress this coming showcase as he may get the chance to lace up his skates with some of the best in the NHL and says he is looking forward to learn from them during training camp.
Game one kicks off tonight in Edmonton at Rogers Place with the puck dropping at 7 p.m. while Game two will have the two squaring off at the Calgary Scotiabank Saddledome at 4 p.m.
The games will be free to stream on the Flames and Oilers‘ official websites.
