Now that autumn and winter are approaching, bears are getting ready for their big hibernation.

As part of getting ready for wintertime, bears will, generally, be out trying to eat as much as possible, causing more bear sightings and encounters.

According to Sgt. Mathew Michaud with the Cochrane/Canmore district of Fish and Wildlife enforcement services in the Sheriff’s Branch, it’s important to follow proper bear safety.

Sgt. Michaud adds that bears can be lazy and like to take the path of least resistance, such as paths and meadows.

If you are hiking, also keep an eye out for berries on the trail and be aware that bears could be in the area.

On top of that, Sgt. Michaud says it is critical for people to have bear spray that is easily accessible, because when a bear is charging, you won’t have much time to react.

For those who live outside of a town or city, to help keep bears from becoming a problem on their property, make sure there are as few bear attractants as possible.

That includes managing fruit bearing trees/bushes and bird feeders, which will help to prevent bears from being attracted to the property.

Sgt. Michaud adds that when going out for hiking, plan to see a bear this time of year, especially because a lot of the bears in Kananaskis Country are used to people, especially along the busier hiking trails.
