Exploring Treaty, Truth, and Trust in “We Are All Treaty People”

The Confluence is proud to partner with Quest Theatre to present public performances of We Are All Treaty People.

These performances are part of a special event series commemorating 150 years since the arrival of the North-West Mounted Police at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers and the establishment of Fort Calgary in 1875. As part of this milestone, The Confluence is taking a more reflective approach acknowledging diverse perspectives on the NWMP’s arrival and exploring the complex histories that make this site so significant.

We Are All Treaty People  tells the story of a Trickster who encounters two young girls, one of Indigenous descent and one of settler descent, as they question whether they can truly be friends. Through storytelling, the Trickster shares the history of Treaty 7: the context of its signing, the promises that were made and broken, and the lasting impacts still felt today. While the play addresses difficult themes such as racism, the whiskey trade, and the legacy of residential schools, it does so through a thoughtful and creative blend of song, prayer, movement, and puppetry, offering a path toward healing, understanding, and reconciliation.

We had a chance to speak with the two directors, Garrett Smith (who is also playing Trickster!) and Nikki Loach (also the Artistic Director of Quest Theater) about what We Are All Treaty People:
