There is a scam reemerging in Calgary that involves people receiving calls from scammers claiming to be police officers.

The Calgary Police recently received several complaints from Calgary residents who received a call from an unknown person who was claiming to be a Calgary Police officer.

This fake officer then asks for financial information or tries to convince them to send money.

According to the Calgary Police, it is believed the calls appear on caller ID as a Calgary Police Service phone number, but the calls are not originating from the Calgary Police.

If anyone receives a call like this, the police advise people to hang up immediately, as the Calgary Police will never call and ask a citizen to provide financial information.

The police also will never ask someone to transfer money as part of an investigation or suggest transactions to help guard your finances.

To help stay safe, the Calgary Police remind people to follow a few tips to protect themselves from financial scams, which include not sharing personal details, financial information, and not sending money to an unknown caller.

On top of that, the police are advising people to be suspicious of unexpected and unusual phone calls, in particular those that demand some form of urgent action, whether it be financial or otherwise.

Anyone who is suspicious after receiving a call regarding their finances, contact the bank or financial institution.

Not only that, but if you are wanting to confirm the identity of a Calgary Police officer, call the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 to verify the person is who they say they are.

Those who have suffered a financial loss or had their personal information compromised due to fraud can report it to the Calgary Police by calling the non-emergency line or by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online, or through the P3 Tips app.

For those who received a fraudulent text message, email, or phone call, but have not lost money, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
