Southern Alberta had a few bear encounters this week, causing bear warnings and a call to Fish and Wildlife.

A bear warning has been issued for a couple areas in Kananaskis Country this week, due to bears bluff charging hikers.

On October 6, a bear warning was issued for Mount Lipsett and the Mist Mountain area, which includes the Elbow-Sheep WPP, Mount Lipsett Scramble, Mist Mountain Scramble South Access, Mist Hot Springs Access, and the surrounding area, because a bear bluff charged a hiker in the area.

Another bear bluff charged a hiker at the Sparrowhawk Day Use Area, causing a bear warning to be issued on October 8 for Sparrowhawk Day Use and Spray Valley Provincial Park.

Then, on October 9, the Calgary Police took to social media to let the public know that a black bear was seen in the Oakridge community in southwest Calgary, near the 400 block of Oakwood Place S.W.

While the bear was not aggressive, Fish and Wildlife were made aware of the bear in the area.

Even though bears have been spotted in those areas, bears can be encountered anywhere in K-Country at any time.

Because of that, to help avoid a surprise encounter with a bear, Alberta Parks suggested those going out for a hike in Kananaskis make plenty of noise and travel in groups, be aware of your surroundings, and keep an eye out for bears and signs of bears.

On top of that, it is recommended to keep attractants, such as food, garbage, and pet food, in vehicles or bear proof lockers, keep pets on a leash, and carry bear spray in a way that it is easily accessible.
