The City of Lethbridge is in the midst of installing a commemorative crosswalk that will honour veterans.
The commemorative Remembrance Day/Veterans Crosswalk is at the intersection of 4 Avenue South and 10 Street South, located near the Cenotaph.
According to Darwin Juell, the GM of Transportation and Transit with the City of Lethbridge, Lethbridge Council approved the funding to create this crosswalk.
Juell added that while there is the option to make these crosswalks permanent, this commemorative sidewalk is made with temporary paint.
On top of this commemorative Remembrance Day/Veterans Crosswalk, the City of Lethbridge has other commemorative crosswalks.
Juell says that while the work is happening, there will be some traffic disruptions.
The crosswalk features a soldier silhouette, and along with the phrases “LEST WE FORGET”, they have the Blackfoot version of the phrase, “IHTAISSKSINI’PA”, and the French version, “NOUS NOUS SOUVIENDRONS”.
The Blackfoot version was interpreted by Blood Tribe Elder Martin Heavy Head as “So that we know”.
While the crosswalk is being painted today, there will be detours in place.
