A Blackfoot artist with a connection to Siksika currently has an art exhibition in Calgary
Ryan Jason Allen Willert from the Stimson family has several pieces on display, and for sale, at the NVRLND Art Foundation space known as The Boutique in Calgary.
The pieces part of the exhibition are of animals, which Willert explains.
The exhibition began today (Thursday, October 30), and will be on until Sunday, November 2.
Willert primarily uses acrylic, and only used oil paints once for a mural.
For the pieces at the exhibition, Willert says he chose the animals out of respect.
Willert has been creating his art since he was a kid, but he says that art was never his passion. Instead, he wanted to get into acting, as he loved comedy shows such as Kids in the Hall.
While art was not his passion, Willert says that art grew into becoming his passion.
According to Willert, art was a source of survival for him at the beginning.
While he has been living off his artwork for 23 years, he currently doesn’t have his artwork on display at other locations.
Willert says that he is currently stockpiling his artwork.
For those who want to buy his artwork, Willert says that he will sell them, but he won’t budge on the price.
On top of the acrylic on canvas pieces part of the exhibition, Willert also has created so many murals that he doesn’t even know how many he has done.
At the opening of the exhibition, Willert made bannock and his wife made berry soup for those who stopped by.
Artist Grant Little Mustache was in attendance, and he spoke about Willert’s art.
