Smudge the Streets is a Winter Solstice Effort to Support Calgary’s Homeless

As winter settles in, a grassroots Calgary group is stepping up to support people experiencing homelessness. Smudge the Streets, led by community advocate Vinette Wahobin, is collecting winter clothing, food, and essentials to distribute on the Winter Solstice, Dec. 21.

Wahobin, who works with Inn From the Cold, says the effort is about community caring for community and offering warmth, dignity, and reassurance to people living on the streets, including many she knows personally.

This month, the group is gathering donations ranging from jackets and blankets to hand warmers and hot chocolate, with volunteers ready to deliver them directly to those who need them most.

We spoke with Vinette about the project, the need she’s seeing, and how Calgarians can help:
