The Alberta Government has proposed increasing the speed limits on divided highways in Alberta, but the Town of Okotoks has concerns about that increase.

On December 8, the Okotoks Town Council approved sending an individual letter and a joint letter with Foothills County to Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC), formally opposing the proposed increase of the Highway 2 speed limit increase.

The proposed increase would see the speed limit be raised from 110 km/hr to 120 km/hr.

According to Okotoks Mayor, Tanya Thorn, there have been studies that show a speed increase would be detrimental to people’s safety in the area.

While it seems like the Provincial Government isn’t taking those concerns seriously, Mayor Thorn believes they must.

Mayor Thorn adds that the Town didn’t receive any feedback on why the Provincial government decided to keep them open.

According to Mayor Thorn, there are a few ways the Town would support the increased speed change.

Mayor Thorn adds that the Town want the speed increased postponed, and least the area near Okotoks, until the required safety improvements are constructed.
