This March will see the Calgary Flames host an Indigenous Celebration at one of their games.

On Saturday, March 7, at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Calgary Flames will be hosting their 4th annual Indigenous Celebration game, which is a celebration of Indigenous culture in Southern Alberta.

Geordie Macleod, the Vice-President of Marketing with Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, explains more.

At these games, they have themes, such as Celebrating Indigenous Youth and Children, which they use to frame out the event.

Macleod adds that in previous years, they even had Indigenous Elders go into the dressing room prior to the game to offer words of encouragement and hold a prayer for the players.

At this year’s Indigenous Celebration, the Flames will be debuting a new Indigenous themed jersey, which has been designed by an Indigenous artist from Southern Alberta.

Macleod says they are waiting a bit to reveal the jersey.

The Calgary Flames held their first Indigenous Celebration night in March of 2023, which Macleod says was especially meaningful, because they had all seven Chiefs participate in a ceremonial puck drop.

Macleod adds that they first held an Indigenous Celebration, because the organization wanted to connect with all the communities that live in Southern Alberta.

At the Indigenous Celebration game, the Calgary Flames will be taking on the Carolina Hurricanes, with puck drop happening at 8 p.m.

This game is also a Hockey Night in Canada game, which will help to create a good amount of visibility on the Indigenous Celebration.

On top of hosting an Indigenous Celebration game, the Calgary Flames have recently acquired Zach Whitecloud, who is of Dakota descent from Manitoba.
