The Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service are building a new detachment, thanks to some additional funding.
The Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service will be expanding, thanks to additional funding they are receiving.
The Satellite detachment funding will help to make sure the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service (Tosguna) has modern facilities, which will help them to deliver effective, culturally responsive policing and safe communities.
“Alberta wants to improve public safety through new approaches to local policing. By reducing response times and improving access to police services, we’re helping ensure communities feel safe and supported, no matter where they live on the nation,” the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services, Mike Ellis, stated in a release. “We are proud to work with the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service to enhance public safety and support First Nations in delivering the policing services that work best for them.”
In a release from the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service, it states they welcomes the Provincial Funding for the new satellite detachment.
Martin Schiavetta, Executive Director with the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service, tells us more.
Currently, Officers who respond to calls in the western areas of their jurisdiction, including Redwood Meadows, can travel upwards of 30 minutes to respond to the call.
The new detachment will significantly reduce travel time, strengthen officer safety through improved backup capacity, as well as increase visible police presence.
The new site for the detachment will be right across from the Redwood Meadows Fire Department, and the area has already been cleared.
Schiavetta adds that this investment is critical to meeting the evolving needs of the community.
Due to the western expansion of the Nation, along with the continued residential and commercial development, have placed an increased demand on police services in recent years.
Schiavetta says that this new detachment will provide modern space to support front line operations and ensure the service can be continually delivering culturally grounded community-based policing.
This funding came about due to the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service advocating to the Provincial and Federal governments.
They are receiving $1.5 million from the Province of Alberta.
The new detachment is expected to be completed by March 31, 2027.
According to the Alberta Government media release, this investment helps to build on the province’s ongoing work to strengthen self-administered First Nations police services.
