The University of Lethbridge’s Indigenous Awareness Week has kicked off.

As part of this week, the University of Lethbridge is celebrating the rich cultural heritage, beliefs, and aspirations of Indigenous People.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Department of Indigenous Studies at the University of Lethbridge.

Leroy Little Bear, Vice Provost for Indigenous Relations at the University of Lethbridge, explains more.

Little Bear adds that while some of the activities are overlapping, this gives people more of an opportunity for students and the community to come and participate.

While this year’s Indigenous Awareness Week is busy, Little Bear says this has been happening for some time.

This week started with an Opening Ceremony at the University of Lethbridge, followed by a Stew and Fry Bread Feast, and a teepee Raising Demo.

Later this evening (Monday, March 2), there is a showcase dedicated to Indigenous awareness week, starting at 6 p.m.

Then, throughout the rest of the week, there will be events such as an Indigenous Awareness Week Powwow, Traditional Kwakiutl Stories, and more.

Little Bear says he is excited for people to take part and celebrate this week.
