An ammonia leak has caused Genesis Place to be closed for several weeks.

Those in Airdrie who visit Genesis Place will have to find someplace else to go for the next few weeks.

On March 16, an ammonia leak was identified within a controlled area in the arena refrigeration system, which serves both ice surfaces at Genesis Place Arenas.

This issue was immediately isolated and all appropriate safety protocols were followed.

Currently, there is no risk to either patrons or staff.

The refrigeration system has been taken offline, and both ice surfaces at Genesis Place are unavailable while investigation continues and repairs are completed.

According to the City of Airdrie, an exact reopening date is not available, but the arena is expected to remain closed for at least three weeks.

The City is working with sport organizations to manage the impact this closure has, which includes exploring alternate ice options where possible.

“We recognize this closure is disruptive and appreciate your patience and understanding. Updates will be provided as timelines are confirmed,” the City of Airdrie stated in a release.
