Springtime heralds warm weather and bears start to waken from their winter sleep.

Because of that, Banff National Park is reminding people heading out to the Rockies to be bear aware.

As bears become more active and activity increases, temporary area closures may be put in place to protect the wildlife and visitors.

According to Banff National Park, these closures are essential this time of year, so they are advising people adhere to all posted signs and restrictions, as they are there to help give bears the space they need and to help keep everyone safe.

When heading out to hike in bear country, Banff National Park advises people to make noise to avoid surprising wildlife and watch for fresh signs of bear activity, such as tracks, scat, diggings, torn logs, or overturned rocks.

If you come across these signs, choose another route.

On top of that, carry bear spray in an easy to access location, keep dogs on a leash and under control at all times, stick to designated trails and travel during daylight hours, hike in tight groups of four or more, as larger groups reduce the risk of serious encounters, and never let children wander away from adults.

Also, if someone comes across a large dead animal or smell something pungent, leave the area immediately and report it to Parks Canada staff.
