The Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service (TNPS) have provided information on an incident that occurred over the weekend involving an officer and an unrestrained dog on Tsuut’ina Nation.
At roughly 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, an officer responded to a call for service regarding a suspicious person.
Once the officer arrived on scene, they were approached by a large, unrestrained white dog that appeared to be friendly.
While the officer was attempting to locate the residents of the home, an unresponsive individual was found in the front yard.
As the officer began providing the unresponsive person assistance, the dog’s behaviour changed and it became aggressive, lunging toward the officer and an individual.
The office had made multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation and move away from the animal.
In spite of the efforts from the officer, the dog continues to advance and attempted to bite, which created an immediate risk to the officer’s safety.
As a last resort, the officer discharged their firearm and injured the dog.
The officer secured the scene and arranged for the dog to be transported to a veterinary clinic, where the dog still is receiving care.
The dog’s owner has been notified.
This incident was captured by the officer’s body-worn camera and is currently under review, which is standard procedure.
