Miss Indigenous Canada is a three-day event which is geared towards young female Indigenous leaders in Canada.
The Contest Pageant was developed by Aleria McKay to empower and encourage young Indigenous women develop leadership skills while creating an environment for them to learn and grow.
26 contestants were chosen from submitted applicants to take part in the contest and of the 26, only three are from Alberta which includes Calgary’s very own Taylor Bottle.
Taylor Bottle of Calgary Alberta has is Blackfoot of the Kainai Nation and the Dene Tha’ and is the only contestant representing Treaty 7 in the first Miss Indigenous Canada contest.
Bottle’s traditional Blackfoot name is Natoyi’pootaki which translates to Sacred Flying Woman.
She currently is a Youth Elder with Planet Youth a program first developed in Iceland that has partnered with Miskanawah which aims to empower the next generation through holistic community building while reconnecting them to cultural traditions and practices.
CJWE connected with Bottle who shares her excited for the upcoming competition and how she will be representing the various communities of Treaty 7 at the competition.
The First Miss Indigenous Canada pageant will be held on July 27 at the Gathering Place by the Grand in Ohsweken, Ontario.
