A call to 911 reported seeing heavy black smoke coming from the plant, and at 8:45 p.m., crews were called to the facility in the 3400 block of Ogden Road S.E.
Firefighters enroute to the scene also witnessed the smoke, immediately calling backup to meet them at Calgary Metal Recycling Inc.
When on the scene firefighters found flames and smoke originating from a pile of crushed vehicles.
Crews utilized aerial ladders to assist in surrounding and extinguishing the fire.
Once crews determined it was safe, they used heavy machinery to pull apart the wreckage and soak it down.
City fire crews got the fire under control in under two hours and the fire was completely extinguished within three hours.
No injuries were reported.
