Indigenous Culture will be on full display this weekend at Medicine Hat for the city’s upcoming cultural days celebration.

For the past thirteen years, the Miywasin Friendship Centre has been hosting Indigenous cultural showcases during the Medicine Hat cultures days celebration.

With the National Day for Reconciliation around the corner, Amy Cross of the Miywasin Centre explains how the showcases are a form of reconciliation.

“The whole event is about Truth and Reconciliation. When we are celebrating and talking about Indigenous culture, we are really promoting ReconciliACTION.” Cross continues, “So we are taking action to include all our public. People can be feeling comfortable asking questions, to attend our events and really participate together.”

Due to the Samson Tipi restoration project still on-going, the showcases of First Nation and Métis taking place on Sept. 21 and 22, will be hosted at Police Point Park.

Cross explains why both Indigenous cultures are shown on different days saying, “We really want to showcase and highlight the two different cultures because in Canada, Indigenous cultures include First Nation, Inuit and Métis which are very diverse cultures…. we have the two different days because we really want to showcase and highlight these two Indigenous cultures.”

Parking is limited and everyone attending is asked to bring their own seating.

More information can be found on the CJWE events calendar.
