The family of Jon Wells, a man killed by Calgary Police outside a hotel earlier this month are taking time to grieve their loss. The family released a statement Friday thanking media for reserving their questions.
The statement included how Wells was a loving father, son, grandson, brother, uncle and nephew to many, he was seen as a well known rodeo athlete who travelled across Canada and the United States for different competitions and was known within the community as a great mentor.
On September 17th, Wells died following an altercation with three CPS officers at the carriage house Inn. The investigation from ASRT indicated Wells was not told to identify himself or that he was being detained.
As the interaction continued, police tried to grab Wells, resulting in a fight where he was tackled and punched.
After he was handcuffed on the floor, emergency crews found he was unresponsive. He died at the scene.
All three officers have been placed on paid leave for the investigation.
