The Colour Orange will be filling the Visitlethbridge.com Arena tonight as the Lethbridge Hurricanes host their first Indigenous Culture Celebration Night against the Swift Current Broncos.
For the past few years, the Canes have hosted every child matters games in coordination with the WHL in February however, as Kathy Hong of the Canes shares, the franchise wanted to do something special for Reconciliation week in the city of Lethbridge.
“We really, really wanted to push something for September this year” Hong said, “It started for us in theory quite a few years ago, but for this game specifically we sat down during the summer about what we could do and what we could make it look like.”
This historic night was made possible through the partnership between the Canes and the City of Lethbridge.
The Lethbridge Hurricanes currently have three Indigenous players on their roster with Tristen Doyle of Peguis Nation in Manitoba, Brayden Edwards of Rama First Nation in BC, and Trae Johnson of Métis Nation of Saskatchewan.
While the team won’t be wearing special warm up jerseys for the night as the Hurricanes official Orange Jersey’s are auctioned off after each Every Child Matters game in February, the City’s official orange shirts will be available for purchase with proceeds going to the All Kids Can Play Program.
Yesterday in a press release, the WHL announced that all teams in the league from Sept. 27 to Oct. 6 will a special helmet decal designed by Métis artist Kim Vizi-Carmen of Pinerock Graphics.
The National Anthem will be sung by Tsuaki Marule of the Kainai Nation in both Blackfoot and English with Indigenous culture will be showcased on the video board during the first and second intermissions.
Puck drop is at 7 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to wear orange to the game.
Fans seeking tickets to the game can use the promo code RECONCILATION through the Canes’ official ticket seller for a discount on tonight’s game.
