The “Sixties Scoop” was a country wide removal which was known as scooping of Indigenous children from families, and communities often from birth who were adopted into non-Indigenous homes.
CJWE spoke with Director and Inuit Rep of the Sixties Scoop Indigenous Society of Alberta Lew Jobs shared more of the history of the scoop.
As away to help communities across Alberta begin to heal from the scoop the Society will be hosting Round Dances to remember those who were taken and ever made it home.
Jobs spoke with who shared how the Round Dance isn’t just for those lost in Scoops, it’s also for the thousands of Indigenous children who are currently in the foster care system.
The treaty 7 Forget Me Not round dance is being Hosted at the Morley Community Gym and will be starting June 2, at four in the afternoon with a pipe ceremony and will be end around midnight. More dances will be taking place across Treaty and Métis territories in the coming future. For more information about the Sixties Scoop visit their website.
