Lethbridge Polytechnic has announced a groundbreaking new educational initiative aimed at enhancing the understanding of Blackfoot culture and traditions. The program, titled A’paitsitapisksinimaattsaa (Weasel People Education): Learning from Blackfoot Identity and Relationships, offers a unique learning experience that combines academic study with local Blackfoot knowledge and land-based practices.
The initiative is designed to foster a deeper awareness of Blackfoot identities, histories, and their traditional connection to the land.
Through this program, students will gain insights into the Indigenous worldview and engage in hands-on learning, strengthening ties between education and the local Blackfoot community.
Marcia Black Water, Professor at Lethbridge Polytechnic, spoke with CJWE about the announcement of the new program in the General Arts and Science Programs and Courses as they look to accept their first students for Fall 2025.

As a member of the Blood Tribe, Black Water speaks emotionally about seeing Blackfoot culture represented at Lethbridge Polytechnic. For her, the opportunity to share the teachings she grew up with and pass them on to students in a post-secondary setting is a dream come true.
