Seasonal Closures Coming to Southern Alberta Border Crossings

By Sarah Scott Sep 29, 2025 | 9:57 AM

International travellers planning to cross between Canada and the U.S. in southern Alberta will need to adjust their routes, as seasonal changes take effect at two ports of entry.

The  Chief Mountain border crossing, located within Waterton Lakes National Park, will close for the season at 6:00 p.m. MST on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025. The crossing, known for its high elevation and harsh winter conditions, is only operational from May through September. It is scheduled to reopen on May 14, 2026.

Meanwhile, the Wild Horse border crossing, Alberta’s easternmost port of entry, will switch to reduced winter hours starting Wednesday, Oct. 1. The crossing connects Highway 41 in Alberta with Highway 232 in Montana, leading toward the city of Havre. From October 1 to May 14, it will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

From May 15 to Sept. 30, it operates from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with commercial traffic Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. excluding holidays.

Drivers can access Highway 89 by taking the Carway border crossing, which is open year-round.

Other land borders crossings in southern Alberta include Coutts, Del Bonita, and Aden. Coutts is the only 24-hour land border crossing in the province.

Travellers are encouraged to check the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) website for the latest updates and travel advisories.
