Drumheller residents are being warned about fraudulent phone calls that utilize artificial intelligence.
The Town of Drumheller took to social media to let residents know that the Drumheller RCMP are warning residents that fraudulent phone calls are utilizing artificial intelligence programs to replicate the voices of relatives and friends.
During the call, the fraudster will often provide a sad story in hopes to gain sympathy from the victim, and then ask for a large quantity of money.
If you are unsure if you are being targeted by these types of fraudulent calls, the Drumheller RCMP suggest people to follow a few tips to remain safe, including establishing a unique and secret password phrase with relatives to verify their identity.
On top of that, if you suspect the phone call is fraudulent, hang up and call the relative back to make sure you are talking to the correct person, and do not send money to anyone without verifying the identity of the people involved.
And if you get the feeling that anything is suspicious, simply hang up and call the police.
To stay informed about fraud schemes, follow the RCMP on social media, as they keep people informed.
