National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak was hosted by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce on Thursday Nov. 6th, for a conversation on the role of First Nations and communities in nation-building projects and their contributions to Canada’s economic prosperity.

Commenting on the 2025 federal budget, Canada Strong, unveiled on Nov. 4 in the House of Commons, National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak says the 2025 federal budget is a missed opportunity for First Nations and Canadians.

Although pleased that some investments, including the protection of the $47.8 billion (negotiated last year) for the long-term reform of Canada’s discriminatory First Nations child welfare system, National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak added generational and strategic investments weren’t included to help close the First Nations education and infustructure gaps and supports.

National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak made a call for a First Ministers Meeting (FMM), and was pleased that Premiers also agreed it was time to reconvene in this way.

National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak added she also still has several questions surrounding the 2025 federal budget.

Also discussed, was filling in the gaps of basic needs and the econmic benefits of working alongside indigenous peoples.

National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak also discussed the role of Canadians, the government and industry in the path forward toward meaningful reconciliation.

National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak also spoke about The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) role in these discussions and meetings, and what they are working towards when it comes to Canadian econmic decisions.

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is a national advocacy organization that works to advance the collective aspirations of First Nations individuals and communities across Canada on matters of national or international nature and concern.
