A flag-raising ceremony Monday, Nov. 17, outside Calgary City Hall marked the start of Métis Week, a celebration of the history, culture, and contributions of the Métis people in Calgary, Alberta and across Canada.

On an overcast, chilly morning, community members, Elders, city councillors, and leaders came together for the ceremony in downtown Calgary and sang the Métis anthem as the Métis flag, which bears a white infinity symbol over a blue field, was raised.

The event followed Louis Riel Day, adding to a week of reflection and recognition of the enduring contributions of Métis people in Calgary and across Alberta.

After the flag-raising ceremony, attendees gathered for jigging, proclamation reading, and speeches in the Municipal Atrium.

Carmen Lasante, District Captain of the Calgary Elbow Métis District, delivered a powerful reflection on Métis history, identity, and responsibility in Calgary.

New Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas spoke candidly about learning about Métis peoples, the community, and the enduring influence of Métis people in shaping the city.
