Winter is roaring into Southern Alberta next week, with lows of minus 20 to be expected.
Alberta will experience a Stratospheric Warming event, which is not as pleasant as it sounds.
According to Jesse Wagar, a Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, this event disrupts the arctic vortex.
Wagar says that the polar vortex is like a prison for cold air, as it keeps it over the polar regions.
If there is a strong polar vortex, it keeps the cold air in that region.
But, when it gets disrupted, it allows for the cold air to escape, which Wagar explains.
That disruption is what is expected to happen next week, which will push cold air down into Alberta, dropping the temperature across the province.
Wagar says that temperatures will drop early next week.
While these types of cool offs happen in the wintertime in Alberta, Wagar says this is one of the earlier ones to have happened.
On top of that, Wagar says that we could be seeing low temperature records next week during this Stratospheric Warming event, along with some snow.
