The Lethbridge Public Library has a new gathering space for Indigenous youth at their Crossings branch.

According to Sarah Head, Manager for Branch Services with the Lethbridge Public Library, when the did recent renovations, they recognized the need for this space.

In the Indigenous Gathering Zone, on top of Indigenous youth being able to hang out, there is a collection of books with an Indigenous focus, and the library plans to get some programming scheduled for the area.

Head adds that this zone has been open for a little bit already.

This space is free for everyone to come and enjoy, and you don’t need a library card.

Head says having these spaces is an act of reconciliation.

The Indigenous Youth Zone is open the same hours as the library, and there is no need to let them know you are coming down ahead of time.

They have named the Indigenous Youth Zone Iitai tsi yoi sii, which means A Place For Vision Quest in Blackfoot.

Head says that the library consulted with local youth and got their input on various aspects of the space, including the carpet, the artwork on the wall, and more.
