Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is the latest United Conservative Party MLA to face a recall campaign, after Elections Alberta approved a petition for her Brooks–Medicine Hat riding.
Petition organizers say Elections Alberta has approved their application, though it hasn’t been posted publicly yet. A letter from the Chief Electoral Officer confirms Smith has been served notice.
The recall push is being promoted through Operation Total Recall, a grassroots campaign targeting multiple UCP MLAs. The group says paperwork for Smith’s riding was officially filed this week.
Local organizers say their concerns stem from what they describe as Smith’s weak connection to the community and her use of the notwithstanding clause.
In a statement Wednesday, the UCP caucus criticized the recall efforts, arguing the process is being misused.
To move forward, the petition will need 12,070 verified signatures. If successful, Smith would become the 15th UCP MLA facing an active recall petition.
Smith has until Dec. 9 to submit a 100-word response.
