This weekend is the first free fishing weekend in Alberta this year.

There are two Family Fishing Weekends in Alberta each year, with the first one being the Family Day Long Weekend (February 14 to 16).

As part of these free fishing weekends, families are able to get out to nature, make memories with the family, and enjoy Alberta lakes, rivers, streams, and more.

Those who go out fishing during these Family Fishing Weekends do not need to purchase a sportfishing licence for waterbodies with open fishing seasons, but those who are using a Special Harvest Licence (Walleye tag) still need to purchase a sportfishing licence.

While fishing is free this weekend, Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, and Wood Buffalo National Park are all excluded, and each place has its own specific rules around fishing.

Prior to heading out fishing this weekend, make sure to review the regulations of the waterbody you plan to fish, which includes rules for bait, catch limits, and the size of fish that people are allowed to keep.

Outside of the free fishing weekends, a Wildlife Identification Number (WIN) card and an Alberta sportfishing licence are required.

The other Family Fishing Weekend this year will be July 11 to 12.
