There’s plenty of things to do in Southern Alberta this weekend

With it being the Family Day long weekend, there is plenty of things to do with the family.

Let’s take a look at what’s happening in Southern Alberta:

 

Friday, February 13

The 15th Annual YYC Hot Chocolate Fest is running all month, with many different hot chocolates available to enjoy all over Calgary and area.

Each Friday, the Town of Okotoks hosts Nature Fridays at the Environmental Education Centre, and on this Friday, children will be able to make heart sun catchers as they celebrate Valentines Day.

At the Okotoks Art Gallery, they have several exhibits for people to check out for free. One exhibit is called The Promise, which showcases Lanhee Cho’s lotus paintings that explore the subtle power of the cycled of life.

The other exhibit at the Okotoks Art Gallery is called Field Studies, which is a reflection of Deanne Underwood’s lifelong relationship with the prairie landscape.

These exhibits will be on display until March 27.

From 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Okotoks Recreation Centre, there is a Valentine’s Day Roller Skating Party. At this event, people will be able to lace up their roller skates and roll around the gymnasiums. People will also be able to enjoy games and other activities.

The Oki Corral Film Festival is happening in Calgary all weekend. This event brings together Indigenous movie lovers for three days of Indigenous created films.

It’s also a Family Fishing Weekend in Alberta, which allows Albertans to enjoy fishing without needing a sportfishing licence.

The Okotoks Oilers will be taking on the team from Salmon Arm at the Viking Rentals Centre in Okotoks, with puck drop happening at 7:05 p.m.

 

Saturday, February 14

From 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Calgary, the 14th annual Fishtival is taking place. As part of this event, there will be games and activities, such as fish feeding, and more.

Winterfest 2026 is taking over Rotary Park in High River from 1 to 4 p.m. At this event, people will be able to enjoy an afternoon packed with family-friendly fun. There will be a snowball toss, tug-of-war, potato sack races, Maple Taffy on Snow, and more.

In Medicine Hat, there is a Memorial March to bring awareness to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The walk begins at noon, starting at Medicine Hat City Hall.

In Airdrie, there is the Cabin Fever festival, which sees indoor and outdoor fun across two locations. At this event there will be music, roving puppets, a craft station, and more.

Also in Medicine Hat is a “I Am a Kind Man” Social Round Dance. At this drug and alcohol-free event, there will be a pipe ceremony and feast, followed by a Round Dance.

At Heritage Park in Calgary, there will be people dancing, beginning at 10 a.m. This is part of the Powwow Drumming Ballroom series, and people will be competing in the Rabbit Dance and the Foxtrot.

 

Sunday, February 15

In Diamond Valley, there is public skating at the Oilfields Regional Arena and the Scott Seaman Sports Rink.

In Coaldale, the 21st Annual Community Fest is kicking off, celebrating Family Day. This is a two-day event that has a Family Day worship service, a pancake breakfast, wagon rides, a hot dog lunch, and more.

The Medicine Hat Tigers will be taking on the Everett Silvertips at Co-op Place in Medicine Hat, while the Okotoks Oilers will be taking on the team from Sherwood Park at the Viking Rentals Centre.

 

Monday, February 16

In Brooks, the weeklong Snowflake Festival begins. At this event, there is free swimming, family friendly games, a dance party, and more. This festival runs until Friday, February 20.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Okotoks Rec Centre, there are free drop-in activities, where people can play in the pool, hit the ice, or visit the gymnasium for free.

The Brooks Bandits will be hosting the Okotoks Oilers at the Centennial Regional Arena, with puck drop happening at 4 p.m.

From noon to 4 p.m. in Medicine Hat, there will be a Family Day Fest that will be packed with free activities for the whole family.

The Medicine Hat Tigers will be taking on the team from Red Deer at the CO-OP Place in Medicine Hat, with puck drop happening at 2 p.m.

Down in Lethbridge, there is a Family Day event at the Nature Centre from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. At this event. There will be a mix of indoor and outdoor activities for people to enjoy.
