Chilly weather won’t stop the fun in Southern Alberta this weekend

Even though it will be a chilly weekend, that won’t stop the fun.

Let’s take a look at what’s happening in Southern Alberta this weekend:

Friday, February 20

The 15th Annual YYC Hot Chocolate Fest is running all month, with many different hot chocolates available to enjoy all over Calgary and area.

As part of this week’s Nature Fridays! In Okotoks at the Environmental Education Centre,  people will be able to learn about horses in honour of the Lunar New Year from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. At this event, there will be activities, crafts, and snacks in the theme of Lunar New Year.

At the Okotoks Art Gallery, there are two art exhibits that people will be able to enjoy for free.

One is Field Studies by Deanne Underwood, which reflects the artists lifelong relationship with the prairie landscape.

The other exhibit is The Promise by Lanhee Cho, which explores the subtle power of the cycles of life.

At the Okotoks Public Library, they are hosting a PD Day Movie, where everyone is invited to come by and watch a movie. But, make sure to bring your own snack and drinks. This event runs from 2 to 4 p.m.

Also at the Okotoks Public Library is a Galentine’s Gathering. As part of this event, people aged 10 to 14 will have an evening filled with sweetness, creativity, and friendship as they celebrate the spirit of Galentine’s Day. There will also be cupcake decorating and the making of friendship bracelets. This event is on from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

At the Old Church Theatre in Okotoks, The Wardens will be performing. This Rocky Mountain-based band blends folk, roots, and western styles, which reflects Canada’s protected wilderness areas. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Over in Diamond Valley, there is Afternoon Shinny from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. at the Scott Seaman Sports Rink.

From 5 to 10 p.m. at the Multicultural Center in Lethbridge, they are hosting Black Movie Night, which is a film experience that celebrates Black voices, culture, and storytelling.

At the VisitLethbridgeLethbridge.com arena, the Medicine Hat tigers will be taking on the Lethbridge Hurricanes, with puck drop happening at 7 p.m.

The Okotoks Oilers will be taking on the team from Cranbrook at the Wiking Rentals Centre in Okotoks, with puck drop happening at 7:05 p.m.

Saturday, February 21

Starting at 10 a.m. at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena, the International Peace Pow-Wow and Festival kicks off. As part of this event, people are invited to come and celebrate community, while experiencing the exhilaration of Indigenous performing arts, and more. This event runs all weekend.

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Okotoks Art Gallery Studio, there is a Back to Basics: Introduction to Artmaking event. As part of this event, local artist Ashley Gaboury helps people to build a solid foundation in visual art, all while exploring a variety of techniques and materials. Most supplies are included.

The Towns of Okotoks, High River, and Diamond Valley have joined forces to host a monthly Repair Café, with the locations rotating between the three towns. This week’s Repair Café will be a the High River Library from 12:30 to 3 p.m., and people will be able to bring their broken items to see if they can be repaired.

The Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament 2026 will be taking place at the YMCA in Lethbridge, starting at 1 p.m., where someone will be crowned as the Rock, Paper, Scissors champion.

At the Okotoks Library from 2 to 4:30 p.m., there is an opportunity for people to catch a movie. As part of Movie and More event, the classing anime film Howl’s Moving Castle will be played for those aged 13 to 17. If people drop in at 2 p.m., they will be able to make candy sushi before the movie starts.

From 3 to 5 p.m. at the Sheep River Library in Diamond Valley, there is the Growing Tomatoes From Seed to Harvest event, where people can learn how to start tomato plants from seeds.

The Blood Tribe invites people to join them at the Multipurpose Building in Stand off, where from 6 to 10 p.m. people will be able to enjoy drumming, dancing, and entertainment. This is part of the Keeping our Niitsitapi Safe Round Dance.

The Medicine Hat Tigers will be hitting the ice at Co-op Place, where they will be taking on the team from Lethbridge. Puck drop happens at 7 p.m.

The Brooks Bandits will host the team from Cranbrook at the Centennial Regional Arena, with puck drop happening at 7 p.m.

Sunday, February 22

From 8 a.m. until noon at the Sheep River Library in Diamond Valley, there is the Growing Tomatoes From Seed to Harvest event, where people can learn how to start tomato plants from seeds.

From 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Scott Seaman Sports Rink in Diamond Valley, people will be able to hit the ice and enjoy family skating fun.
