The first residents of a Tsuut’ina Nation development have officially moved in.

Taza Park is a 50/50 partnership between Tsuut’ina Nation and the Canadian developer, Canderel, and is one of the largest Indigenous-led developments in North America.

This milestone signals the transition from plans and infrastructure to families, homes and neighbourhood life, while the rest of the community is still being built.

This 470-acre community is part of a broader 1,200-acre Taza development, which, once complete, will see more than 6,500 homes, retail and commercial development, parks, wetlands, and gathering spaces, which are designed to reflect the Tsuut’ina values.

In a release about the development, Xàkíjí (Head Chief) Ellery Starlight of Tsuut’ina Nation, stated they are proud of their progress with this development.

“For generations, we have worked towards building economic opportunity on our Nation that respects our land, our people and our responsibilities to future generations. This milestone marks the beginning of a neighbourhood where relationships can grow and community can thrive,” Starlight stated. “We’re very proud of the progress we’ve made, and we remain focused on doing things the right way, with purpose, transparency and lasting benefit for our Nation. Today, I am overwhelmed with pride to welcome the first residents to Taza Park in Tsuut’ina Nation.”

Xàkújà (Minor Chief) Zachary Manywounds, from Tsuut’ina Nation says they see the value of this development.

Manywounds add that this community is the beginning stages of their future.

Not only that, but Manywounds says the land holds historic value that will be passed down to each resident, and their ancestors will walk with the new homeowners every day.

Vered Amir, the VP of Brand Leadership and Community Engagement for Homes by Avi Group of Companies, says the land the homes are built on feel sacred.

This development is built on the same land that one of the last Sun Dances was held on in the 1930’s.

Xàkújà Manywounds adds that through this community, they are able to fulfill the promises of their ancestors.

The residential construction at Taza Park is advanced through partnerships with Brookfield Residential, Crystal Creek Homes, and Homes by Avi.

These completed homes are part of Aurora at Taza Park, which is a collection of contemporary townhomes created by Homes by Avi.

As part of Aurora, there are 46 row townhomes, which include open-concept living spaces, modern architecture, and secondary suites.
