Piikani Nation will be getting additional police officers.

The Alberta RCMP is welcoming 21 new officers to their ranks across the province, including in Piikani Nation.

Each of these officers have recently graduated from the Cadet Training Program at the RCMP’s training academy in Regina, which has equipped them with the necessary policing skills to serve their new communities.

On top of Piikani Nation receiving new officers, officers will be sent to Barrhead, Cardston, Chateh, Coronation, Drayton Valley, Fort Vermilion, High Prairie, Hinton, Lloydminster, McLennan, Provost, Redcliff, Red Earth Creek, Stettler, St. Paul, Valleyview, Vegreville, Wainwright, and Wood Buffalo.

“We recognize that police visibility and staffing levels remain key concerns for the communities we serve,” the Deputy Commissioner Trevor Daroux, Commanding Officer of the Alberta RCMP, stated in a release.  “These new police officers are an example of our focus to look inward at our hiring processes to remove barriers, find efficiencies, and ensure the most qualified applicants are chosen to serve your communities.”

Also, additional strategies to address vacancies and temporary absences, including the Alberta RCMP’s Relief Team, which is located outside of Cochrane and Leduc, and will provide frontline support to communities that are facing vacancies, injuries, or major events.

Already this year, 65 deployments have been planned across 16 detachments in the province.

Alternate Service Delivery Models are also being used for isolated locations, such as an Implemented Fly-In Model in Fox Lake.

On top of that, 34 active reservists are supporting frontline policing across the province, with 11 more in the application process.
